Aleksandra Kardwell opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a prayer by Ed Simioni. Maria Fumai Dietrich of the Southampton Intermediate School spoke about the 38-yr old Skate Night program, which is a social, safe event for the students, many of whom are from economically disadvantaged homes. Rotary made a $500 donation to help purchase needed new skates. Amy Engel from Brookhaven National Lab spoke to the Lab’s mission (fundamental elements, light enabled science discovery, interdisciplinary emergent information science and next generation science capabilities). Its Genesis Mission explores AI among other energy applications. One of 17 national labs, Brookhaven produced the research for 7 Nobel Prizes and has the only NASA radiation lab in the country. The Lab is federally funded, privately operated, and offers various research, academic, industry and business partnerships, including small business. Every June, July and August the Lab hosts an Open House. Amy noted a bit of historical trivia: the Lab is located on US Army’s Camp Upton site, where soldiers were prepared for service during both World Wars. Broadway’s Irving Berlin wrote “Oh, How I Hate To Get Up in the Morning” while stationed at Camp Upton. Karen Acker was Sargeant and gave us insights on the Roshashana holiday (literally Head of the Year) and provided apple and pumpkin treats so we would all have a "sweet new year". Vicki won the table stakes, but James did not pull the winning card.
